I am grateful for GPS devices available today when I am sometimes not sure about where I am going. Do you ever get confused about your direction in life? For those moments when you are not sure where you are going, remember that God does. He is the best GPS!! We read in Proverbs 20:24, “A man’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way?” The Holy Spirit gives us discernment and direction throughout life.
The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit – the third person of the Trinity – lives in those who confess Jesus to be their Savior. And part of the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to point us to Jesus and to help us hear when God speaks.
The word that we read in the Gospel of John (14-16) is the word that Jesus uses for the Holy Spirit – “Counselor,” – parakletos comes from two Greek words, kalei, which means to call someone, and para, which means to come alongside somebody. So, the idea is that the Holy Spirit is the One who is called to come alongside another and stand by them. He is “the HELPER!”
In other words, the Holy Spirit helps us hear the words that come directly from Jesus himself, tailored to fit the specific needs of our lives. And when we have trouble listening or understanding, the Holy Spirit becomes our guide and interpreter. So, when we are open to His presence, He comes alongside us to give direction and to teach spiritual truths and to help us hear God’s voice.
